I recently hired two people who were IRC regulars. I felt very comfortable after "getting to know them" over the last few months on IRC. Of course face to face meetings and interviews were essential, but the time spent with them on IRC really added to my ability to judge their character. I realize now that I am actively recruiting from my network of weak ties [...] The Net has always been a big part of my arsenal of networking tools, but I think it's reaching a whole new level. more evidence why all HCI masters students should have websites with a resume, portfolio, and weblogs.
Life/work at eBay has improved. It was a tough ramp up and I'm still getting settled, but I'm starting to understand how things are done. I'm still seeking an equilibrium in my non-work life and my weblogging has suffered.
Previously my main job was finding a job and so I could justify 3+ hours daily to read and write weblogs. I considered it time well spent keeping up with events in the industry and trying to make a name for myself. Now my time outside of work is very limited and I enjoy spending it with my friends.
Are insightful non-navel gazing weblogs restricted to the unemployed, corporate sponsored, or self funded? I'm not sure, and even if it's true, there are enough of these to generate some very interesting reading. While I've cut back my subscription file I am firing up my aggregator again, and hopefully I'll begin writing non-navel gazing posts again soon too.
