Tech and Six Sigma

Mary Jo Foley of Microsoft Watch writes:

Sigma-Size It. Microsoft quietly released its Six Sigma Accelerator via its download site on Tuesday. The set of methodologies and blueprints, built on top of Project Server and SharePoint Team Services, is aimed at aiding customers in reducing their business costs, while improving their overall quality management processes.

After Business 2.0's article on Six Sigma at Intuit and the tech world in general I've been trying to learn more about it.  I first learned about Six Sigma from reading the book Jack: Straight from the Gut which is about Jack Welch's tenure at GE.  I've discussed it with my friend George Fairbanks whose a CS PHD student at CMU and has a lot of business sense.  I  also talked with my friend Pat Murray whose in the MBA program at Dartmouth and is working for GE this summer.  I understand the general idea of Six Sigma, which is to eliminating defects by manging process but I still don't understand exactly how you identify good metrics and measure your results.
