I just read a very interesting analysis by Andrew Seybold on the communication challenges faced by public safety officials. He talked the dynamic way police and fire dept officials have to switch from one to one, one to many, and many to many:
"One call from a pregnant woman who had lost control of her car was especially interesting. The CHP officer, even before reaching the scene, asked for a medic team and ambulance, a fire truck and a back-up officer. When he arrived at the scene, medics were only minutes behind him. The woman had some problems and the coordination of the various agencies probably saved her life or the life of her baby. It isn't simply about interoperability--it is about being able to hear what is going on around you and coordination or dispatch centers being able to reach out and get the resources they need, when they are needed."
